Located in the Krabi Province, not too far from the mainland, Koh Phi Phi is actually made up of a bunch of islands. The two most well-known ones are Phi Phi Don and Phi Phi Leh. You might remember Phi Phi Leh from the movie “The Beach” with Leonardo DiCaprio, which made it even more famous.

Koh Phi Phi has something for everyone. On Phi Phi Don, you’ll find a fun atmosphere with lots of bars, restaurants, and places to shop. The central spot for all these activities is called Tonsai Village.

But the real magic of Koh Phi Phi is in its natural beauty. Phi Phi Leh, the smaller island, is super relaxed with its tall cliffs, hidden coves, and Maya Bay (that’s the famous beach from the movie). Snorkeling and diving here is incredible because of the colorful fish and coral reefs.

What to see and do

If you like hiking and beautiful views, there are spots like the Phi Phi Viewpoint where you can see the whole area, especially at sunset. For a quieter beach experience, you can check out Loh Lana Bay or Long Beach.

No matter what kind of traveler you are, Koh Phi Phi has something for you. There are affordable places to stay for backpackers, and if you’re looking for luxury, you can find upscale resorts. The friendly locals and the amazing scenery will make your visit to Koh Phi Phi unforgettable.

Location & history

Koh Phi Phi’s location is approximately 45 kilometers southwest of mainland Thailand. Our tours by speedboat take around 1-1,5 hours to get there. Its pristine beaches, towering limestone cliffs, hidden coves, and lush greenery have made it a very popular destination for travelers worldwide.

The history of Koh Phi Phi is rich, with small settlements dating back to prehistoric times. Over the centuries the islands served as a stopping point for traders and fishermen. During the previous century, it started gaining popularity among backpackers and adventure seekers. The famous Maya Bay on Phi Phi Leh was propelled to international fame by the movie “The Beach,” starring Leonardo DiCaprio, further boosting the islands’ tourism.

How to get to Koh Phi Phi

The best way to visit Koh Phi Phi is by one of the tours from Krabi & Ao Nang. During a guided day trip with lunch, you will get to see all the highlights the islands have to offer. We have both an early bird trip to Phi Phi & the 4 islands and a regular speedboat trip available.

Tips for visiting

  1. Check the Weather: The best time to visit the Phi Phi Islands is during the dry season from November to April. However, even during the dry season, weather conditions can vary, so be prepared for occasional rain or choppy seas.
  2. Book tours in Advance: The islands can get crowded during peak tourist seasons, so it’s advisable to book your tours (and accommodation} well in advance, especially if you are traveling between november-february.
  3. Pack Light: Travel to the islands typically involves taking a tour or ferry, and there will be limited space for luggage. Pack only what you need and consider leaving unnecessary items in your hotel.
  4. Cash and ATMs: There are ATMs on the islands, but it’s a good idea to bring enough cash with you, especially if you plan to visit smaller or more remote areas on the islands (in Thailand, cash is still king!)
  5. Stay Hydrated: The tropical climate can be dehydrating, so carry a reusable water bottle and drink plenty of water, particularly when doing outdoor activities.
  6. Protect the Environment: Respect the environment by not littering, disposing of trash properly, and avoiding contact with or damaging coral reefs while snorkeling or diving.
  7. Sun Protection: The sun in the tropics can be strong. Bring sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat to protect yourself from sunburn.

Frequently asked questions about Koh Phi Phi

The best time to visit Koh Phi Phi is from November to April, when the weather is dry and sunny. A visit during the monsoon season (June to October) can still be enjoyable, but the seas can be rough and many dive & snorkeling sites may be closed.

The last few years, Maya bay has been closed to visitors between August – October. During covid times the bay was sealed off completely, making sure that wild- and marine life could recover. Nowadays the bay closes around 2 months every year, but this will be decided again every year. When Maya Bay is closed, our tours will still run. We have a look at the famous bay from outside. You will be able to see the bay and its beaches, but we won’t be allowed to dock there. This is all done to preserve nature and is in everyone’s best interest!

The most popular locations include Maya Bay (if it’s open for visitors), Phi Phi Viewpoint, Loh Sama Bay, Tonsai Village, and the various beautiful beaches on Phi Phi Don. During one of our group or private tours you will enjoy the highlights of all the islands.

You can visit Koh Phi Phi independently by booking ferry tickets yourself. However, many tourists opt for organized island-hopping tours that include multiple destinations. Especially if you are staying in Ao Nang or Krabi mainland, a tour is the best way to enjoy everything the islands have to offer.

The national park fee is THB 400 per adult (children THB 200). The fees are used by the national park organization to protect the marine life, preserve the area and to keep the islands clean. This fee can only be paid in cash at the start of the tour and is excluded from the price in our Phi Phi island tours from Krabi.
